The Joint Revenue Board (JRB) has announced that Nigeria will begin nationwide use of a new tax identification portal from January 1, 2026, in a move aimed at improving and modernising the country’s tax administration system.
The board announced on Monday through a notice shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, urging taxpayers to prepare for the transition to the new system.
According to the JRB, the tax identification (Tax ID) is a unique, system-generated number that will be assigned to all individuals, businesses, and organisations liable to pay tax in Nigeria, strictly for tax administration purposes.
The board explained that the new Tax ID will be linked to the National Identification Number (NIN) for individuals, while businesses and organisations will have their Tax ID connected to their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration numbers.
It added that the newly introduced Tax ID will replace all previously issued tax identification numbers once the portal becomes effective in January 2026.
The JRB also clarified that the introduction of the Tax ID will not lead to automatic deductions from bank accounts or the closure of accounts due to non-compliance, addressing concerns raised by some members of the public.
According to the board, the portal is designed to provide a unified identification system for taxpayers, make it easier to access tax-related services, and ensure that taxpayers across the country can use the platform seamlessly.
The board advised taxpayers to retrieve their Tax ID through the designated online portal when it goes live or visit the nearest tax office for guidance and assistance.
