The Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has announced plans to develop modern school infrastructure across the state as part of efforts to enhance the learning environment for children.
The Chairman of the Board, Hon. Samuel Mariere, disclosed this on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, during the inter-ministerial budget defence held in Asaba.
Mariere reaffirmed the commitment of the state government, led by Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to prioritizing the educational needs of children through improved facilities and digital learning tools.
“By the grace of God, His Excellency is putting SUBEB on a strong footing for school children across the state to get the best learning environment,” he said.
“We are also thinking of going more digital in our schools, and luckily we got a very favorable response from the ministry.”
According to him, the upcoming 2026 budget is being structured to address key infrastructural challenges in basic education, with the ultimate goal of producing better learning outcomes across the state.
“The governor expects better learning outcomes so that our children will be better,” he added.
Speaking on the ongoing national school sports competition, the SUBEB chairman expressed confidence in Delta State’s performance, saying the state is poised to excel at every stage of the event.
Mariere also highlighted the scale of SUBEB’s financial responsibilities, noting that teacher salaries constitute a significant portion of the board’s budget.
“SUBEB’s budget is very massive, and it is not what you can just summarise. Teachers’ salaries alone could be about ₦3 billion,” he explained.
“SUBEB is also funded not only by the state but by the federal government and local governments. It is not a budget that we can give in one line; we present our budget in different areas.”
The budget defence continues as ministries and agencies outline their financial plans for the coming fiscal year.
