INEC Clears Air on Warri Wards Delineation

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims that it suspended the proposed delineation of wards in the Warri federal constituency of Delta State.

Delineation is the process of dividing an area into constituencies, wards, or polling units for elections. It helps ensure fair representation and smooth voting.

In December 2022, the Supreme Court ruled that INEC must carry out the delineation of wards in Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South-West local government areas. Following this directive, INEC began consultations with stakeholders in February 2023.

However, a recent report claimed that the exercise had been suspended. INEC has now clarified the situation through a statement signed on Monday by Sam Olumekun, its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

According to the statement, the supposed suspension was based on a misquotation of an INEC official. “Contrary to the report, the proposed delineation has not been suspended, and no final decision has been taken on the matter,” the commission said.

INEC also noted that its ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) is still being carried out in all the affected local government areas.

The commission appealed to all parties involved to remain peaceful while the matter is being handled.

This clarification comes after INEC had earlier stated in April that it was yet to make a final decision on the delineation process in Warri constituency.
