Asaba, September 17, 2024 – The Delta State Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Akporokiamo Ekedayen, expressed deep gratitude to the World Bank and the federal government for their pivotal role in the NG-CARES financial initiative during the official flag-off of the 4th disbursement of the Delta State Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (D-CARES). The event, held at the Dome Event Center in Asaba, saw a remarkable 97,365 individuals benefit from the initiative.
Mr. Ekedayen hailed the program as one of the most impactful World Bank-supported projects in Nigeria, emphasizing its widespread acclaim due to its transparency and far-reaching impact. “This is one of the programs that is people-oriented, and it has touched the lives of several people. This is just another circle in the chain that is most likely going to continue,” he noted.
He further highlighted that the federal government is set to launch the second phase of the NG-CARES initiative, acknowledging the necessity of its continuation based on the significant success achieved so far. “The testimonies are all there for people to see,” he said, reaffirming the program’s positive influence on communities and individuals.
The Commissioner also urged beneficiaries to make effective use of the starter packs provided, cautioning them against selling the equipment without using them to uplift their economic status. “Times are tough, and once you get this kind of opportunity, try and make the best use of it. These things are meant to help you generate money, build wealth, and migrate yourself from the position of abject poverty to the level of economic sustainability,” he advised.
In addition, he encouraged recipients under the FADAMA initiative to utilize the agricultural inputs—including farm equipment, seedlings, pesticides, and fertilizers—given to them to enhance food production and contribute to food security. “In another couple of months, these things will translate into food that we all will benefit from, especially now that food prices are very expensive,” he remarked, stressing the government’s commitment to alleviating food insecurity.
The D-CARES program continues to provide crucial support to vulnerable communities, fostering resilience and economic growth across Delta State.
