The Government of Bauchi State has revealed plans to repatriate all commercial sex workers operating in the state to their various places of origin.
These were disclosed during a pre-Ramadan sensitization workshop held at Bayan Gari Area by the Permanent Commissioner in charge of Hisbah in the Shariah Commission, Aminu Balarae Isah.
According to the Commissioner, the repatriation will be done in collaboration with their various states and local government areas stating that, before the repatriation, all the sex workers’ data will be collected through a headcount.
Adding that, the data would be used to provide economic empowerment for them, stating that seed capital will be provided for self-reliance and enable them to get a more decent source of livelihood.
While briefing the sex workers, Isah stated that the government is not planning to arrest them but to help repatriate them to their various local government areas and states of origin so that they can engage themselves in a meaningful and decent life.
Isah also revealed some information he gathered from a recent interview conducted by his office on why some of the sex workers were into the indecent trade, explaining that some allege it because of maltreatment from their stepmothers, poverty, and illiteracy.
Isah said, “We discovered that others were forced into the act by the activities of their co-wives.
However, while commending the initiative, one of the participants at the workshop who spoke on behalf of her colleagues, Hafsatu Azare commended Hisbah for organizing the educative and beneficial workshop.
She also assured that if the government would help them with a better source of livelihood, they would quit these indecent living adding that, their lives are always endangered as a result of what they do which is immoral, ungodly, and capable of exposing them to untold hardships and experiences adding that their health is being endangered.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner also promised that some of them who are Indigenes of Bauchi State would get suitable spouses, stating that, Hisbah would help in marrying them off and provide them with all the necessary marital beddings including furniture.
