A 43-year-old Nigerian citizen, Leonard Lyeanyi, who resides in India had reportedly died at DDU hospital in west Delhi on Sunday over alleged assault by a cop.
According to reports by Outlook India, the death of the Nigerian national has sparked violent protests by his compatriots who alleged that a cop assaulted him in Tilak Nagar in West Delhi, an allegation denied by the police.
The report claims that the African nationals created ruckus following the death of Leonard Lyeanyi.
It was gathered that the mob attacked the local people and the police personnel, it reveals how the nationals also attacked officials of the High Commission of Nigeria who had come to them.
The report also claimed that the glasses at Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) hospital were broken, according to the report, the protesters were initially 20 to 30, but their numbers increased to 100.
The report also revealed that the protesters claimed that Lyeanyi died after being lathi-charged by the police.
A senior police officer said they received information from the DDU hospital about Lyeanyi’s death at around 3:30 am on Sunday.
The officer said the post-mortem reports of the victim are awaiting while maintaining that the victim was not hit by them as his medico-legal case (MLC) report showed no external injury on the body.
The police also said that they found CCTV footage wherein the victim could be seen stepping out of an auto-rickshaw and was sitting near a shop before he was collapsed and hit his head on the ground, claiming that there was nobody around him.
The police further said that two cases have been registered against the violent mob, stating that a probe is on the matter.
