“We Haven’t Borrowed a Dime”: Delta Govt Sets Record Straight

The Delta State Government has confirmed that it has not borrowed any money since Governor Sheriff Oborevwori assumed office on May 29, 2023.

No Loans Taken
Chief Fidelis Tilije, the Commissioner for Finance, stated during a press conference in Asaba that reports claiming the state had borrowed money were false. “This administration hasn’t taken any loans, whether from banks, companies, or individuals,” he clarified.

Financial Stability
Tilije emphasized that Delta State is financially strong. He explained that the government has been paying for construction projects and settling debts without borrowing money.

Support for Contractors
To ensure projects move quickly, the government has been giving contractors advance payments. Tilije shared that contractors now receive up to 40% of the project funds upfront, with plans to increase it to 70% during the dry season to avoid delays caused by inflation.

Governor’s Leadership Praised
Charles Aniagwu, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information praised Governor Oborevwori for his honesty and transparency. He assured the public that all completed projects were funded with the state’s resources.

A Strong Financial Future
Aniagwu dismissed claims of borrowing and highlighted the state’s financial health. “We are financially stable and managing our funds well,” he said.

The government reassured residents that it is working hard to complete projects and maintain Delta State’s financial stability.
