Tackling Youth Issues and Promoting Peace: Hon. Taju Isichei Shares Insights on Community Development Efforts

The Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) recently hosted the 15th edition of its ‘Journalists Hangout’ at the NUJ Secretariat in Asaba, themed ‘From Parley to Party.’ The event featured Hon. Taju Isichei, Executive Assistant to the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Community Development, outlined the critical responsibilities and activities of his office.

In his address, Hon. Isichei described himself as a dedicated politician committed to the interest of Delta State and the nation. “I am one of the courageous politicians who are ready to take on any question at any time because my interest is the interest of Delta State and the interest of the people of Nigeria,” he said. He emphasized that public service should focus on positively impacting lives and effecting meaningful change.

Reflecting on his public service career, Hon. Isichei recalled his appointment a year ago as Executive Assistant to the Governor on Community Development. He also spoke about his tenure as a Special Adviser on Inter-Party Relations under former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan in 2011. Following a brief hiatus, Hon. Isichei expressed his renewed dedication to serving Delta State.

Hon. Isichei detailed his responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of fostering community development and addressing social issues. He highlighted his efforts to combat cultism and drug abuse among Delta youth and described organizing a workshop involving police and NDLEA representatives to educate community members on the dangers of these vices. “There is no way that the government will bring meaningful development to a community where there is no peace,” he noted, explaining his focus on eliminating obstacles to community peace and growth.

He shared initiatives aimed at young people, including a recent campaign in secondary schools where he used his personal life as an example of positive decision-making. “I have not smoked, taken beer, or been to a club. I use my life as an example to encourage students,” he said, highlighting the need for youth education and mentorship.

Hon. Isichei also discussed development priorities such as streetlights, drainage, and rural electrification, linking them to community needs. He stressed the importance of tax compliance in supporting development and urged communities to engage with their youth leaders and government officials to advocate for local needs.

Responding to questions about abandoned projects, Hon. Isichei assured attendees that efforts were underway to address these issues within Oshimili South.

In his closing remarks, Comrade Churchill Oyovwe, Chairman of the Delta State NUJ Council, expressed appreciation to Hon. Isichei for attending the event. He described the ‘Journalists Hangout’ as a platform for public and private sector stakeholders to share their progress and challenges, fostering transparency and dialogue.

The event provided a forum for journalists and attendees to gain insight into the efforts and vision of Hon. Isichei’s office, reflecting on the complexities and solutions to community challenges in Delta State.
