Bodo, Rivers State – Wednesday, March 18, 2025
Police in Rivers State have arrested two people after a pipeline explosion in the Bodo community. The explosion, which happened on Monday night, caused a huge fire but has now been put out.
The Trans-Niger Pipeline, which carries crude oil to the Bonny Export Terminal, caught fire at the border of Kpor and Bodo communities. Thick black smoke covered the sky as the flames burned through the mangrove forest.
Police Investigation Begins
The Rivers State Police Command said it has started investigating what caused the explosion. Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Iroko confirmed that two individuals have been taken in for questioning.
“The police are working hard to find out if the fire was caused by an accident or if someone set it on purpose,” she said.
Security officers who were patrolling at night noticed the fire and quickly informed Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), which owns the pipeline. Shell then shut down the affected pipeline to prevent more damage.
Government’s Response
The Minister of Regional Affairs, Abubakar Momoh, said the government is still gathering details about what happened.
“We don’t have all the information yet, but investigations are ongoing,” he said during a television interview. He assured the public that officials would soon have a clear explanation of the incident.
Community Reaction
After the fire was put out, some residents were seen at the scene, watching over the area. People in the community are worried about their safety and the impact of the explosion on their environment.
For now, authorities say the situation is under control and there is no more danger to people or the environment.
