Abuja, Nigeria — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced that it will restart the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) across the country from August 25, 2025, as Nigeria gears up for key state elections and the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made on Friday, July 25, through INEC’s verified social media platforms and a widely circulated press statement titled: “2025 Nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (#CVR)”.
Two-Step Registration Process
INEC explained that the voter registration will follow a hybrid format, combining online pre-registration and in-person data capturing.
- Online Pre-registration Begins: August 18, 2025 Website: www.cvr.inecnigeria.org
- In-Person Registration Begins: August 25, 2025 Location: INEC Local Government Offices and other designated centers nationwide Time: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Monday to Friday
Who Should Register?
INEC is calling on all eligible Nigerians, especially:
- Those who have just turned 18
- First-time voters
- People who lost their PVCs
- Voters who want to change their polling unit
- People with errors in their previous voter records
This exercise gives citizens another chance to be part of the democratic process and cast their votes in future elections.
Why This Matters
The upcoming CVR is important as Nigeria prepares for off-cycle state elections and the 2027 general polls. INEC hopes the early start will boost participation and allow enough time to fix issues from past elections.
The commission has faced criticism after the 2023 elections, where delays and technical glitches raised concerns about voter access and fairness. This new registration drive is part of its efforts to rebuild trust and improve the system.
What You Need to Register
To register, you’ll need:
- A valid form of identification (such as NIN, driver’s license, or international passport)
- Accurate personal details
- A valid phone number and email address (for online pre-registration)
- To physically appear at a center for biometrics (photo and fingerprints)
INEC urges every eligible Nigerian not to wait until the last minute. Whether it’s your first time or you’re updating your records — now is your chance to get ready to vote.
