Heavy Rain Hits Agbor: Government Calls for Action

Asaba, Delta State – The Delta State Government is asking everyone—residents, communities, and organizations—to work together to stop floods and other disasters from happening.

During a press meeting in Asaba on Thursday, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, spoke about the heavy rain and flooding that happened on Wednesday in Boji-Boji Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area.

He said the rain caused damage, especially to motorcycles and cars in the area, and it’s a reminder that everyone needs to take action. “We all saw how strong the rain was yesterday,” he said. “And we must now work together to stop things like this from getting worse.”

Why Flooding Happens

Mr. Aniagwu explained that flooding happens not just because of the rain, but also because people throw trash into gutters and drains. This blocks the flow of water and causes it to spill onto the roads.

He said: “Some people dump waste in drains, thinking the rainwater will carry it away. But this blocks the water channels. When drains are blocked, water finds a new path—usually onto the roads and into homes.”

What the Government Is Doing

The Commissioner said that the government has already built big drains and stormwater systems in many areas, especially along new roads. He mentioned places like:

  • Ogbeogonogo Market area in Asaba
  • Behind Asaba Specialist Hospital
  • Owa-Alero area
  • Osubi, Okuokoko, Ugolo-Okpe, and Warri

These drains help carry rainwater away quickly, so it doesn’t cause flooding. But he added that even these systems can be overwhelmed when people keep blocking them with waste.

Let’s Learn from Other Countries

Mr Aniagwu said that flooding also happens in other parts of the world, even in rich countries like Dubai and Spain. He said this to show that disasters can happen anywhere, but how people respond is what makes a difference.

He asked politicians and residents not to use the flood as a chance to complain, but to help find real solutions instead.

Helping Each Other

The Commissioner said he feels sorry for those who lost their bikes or cars in the flood and promised that the government will keep working to stop it from happening again.

He ended by encouraging everyone to:

  • Stop throwing trash into gutters or drains
  • Report blocked drains to authorities
  • Keep the environment clean
  • Follow safety advice when it rains

“Flooding is everyone’s problem,” he said. “The government can build drains, but if we don’t take care of them, they won’t work. Let’s protect our state together.”
