Asaba, 27th August 2024 – The Delta State Government has expressed serious concern over recent reports circulating on some online media platforms alleging that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori borrowed N40 billion shortly after taking office.
The government has categorically denied these reports, describing them as misleading and potentially harmful to public understanding and peace within the state. In an official statement, the Delta State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi M. Osuoza, clarified that neither Governor Oborevwori nor his administration has borrowed any amount since assuming office.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I wish to state categorically that the Delta State Government did not borrow N40 billion, and the Sheriff Oborevwori administration has not borrowed any dime till now,” Dr. Osuoza said. He urged anyone interested in the truth to verify the records, which are open to public scrutiny.
Dr Osuoza explained that the only financial action taken by the Oborevwori administration in this context was the facilitation of an N40 billion loan facility on behalf of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON). This loan, intended to address the unpaid pension liabilities of retired local government personnel, is to be repaid over five years through direct debits from the Local Government Councils.
Addressing another point of contention, Dr Osuoza emphasized that the current N465 billion debt profile referenced by some reports pertains to obligations accumulated by previous administrations. He praised Governor Oborevwori as a prudent manager of state resources, highlighting his commitment to adhering to the terms of existing loan agreements.
“The Governor deserves commendation, not condemnation, for being a man of honour and integrity,” Dr Osuoza stated, adding that responsible debt servicing and repayment are hallmarks of a well-managed economy and enhance the state’s credibility within the global financial community.
The Commissioner also appealed to the media to adhere to professional ethics by cross-checking facts before publishing potentially damaging reports. He reiterated that Governor Oborevwori maintains an open-door policy and is fully committed to transparency and accountability in the governance of Delta State.
