Delta, Nigeria – The Federal Government has kicked off the construction of a brand-new 17.5km dual carriage access road that will make reaching the Second Niger Bridge much easier. In a ceremony held on Monday, President Bola Tinubu officially launched the project, saying that the government is working hard to improve road safety and connectivity and boost trade and commerce across Nigeria.
President Tinubu, represented at the event by Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori explained that this access road shows his administration’s strong commitment to building important infrastructure. He recalled that the opening of the Second Niger Bridge in December 2022 brought a new era in road travel by connecting major highways, including the Asaba-Benin and Onitsha-Enugu routes.
The President highlighted that modern roads not only help people travel safely and quickly but also create jobs, support tourism, and allow goods to move smoothly from where they are made to where they are sold. “A strong economy is built on good roads, modern infrastructure, and accessible public services,” he said. He added that many countries invest in their infrastructure because it creates opportunities for economic and industrial growth.
Governor Oborevwori praised President Tinubu’s vision, noting that the new road complements another recent project—the rehabilitation of the Benin-Asaba Expressway, which connects Edo and Delta States. He said that these projects are very important for boosting trade and making travel easier for millions of Nigerians.
Minister of Works David Umahi also joined in the celebration. He complimented Governor Oborevwori for his efforts in improving federal roads in the state, mentioning that his work has greatly helped reduce travel problems in Delta State.
Engr Olufunsho Adebiyi, the Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Works, explained that the new road will pass through several communities in Delta State, including Issele-Azagba, Okpanam, Ibusa, Asaba, Okwe, and Oko-Amakun before reaching the bridge. This will help reduce congestion and improve the lives of many people living in the area.
The project is part of President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” a plan aimed at modernizing Nigeria’s roads, railways, and water networks to help the country grow stronger. Although road users might face some temporary inconveniences during construction, all the leaders involved are confident that the road will be built on time and to high-quality standards.
This new access road is a big step forward in connecting Nigeria’s regions and supporting the country’s economic growth, making travel safer and easier for everyone.
