Team defeats USA, Qatar to emerge global champions in Qatar

In a big moment for Nigeria, a group of smart and confident students from Delta State have won the World School Debate Championship held in Doha, Qatar. This amazing victory has made not only Delta State proud but the entire country too.

The team, made up of five students from different secondary schools in Delta, represented Nigeria at the global event after winning the national debate championship organized by the Presidential Schools Debate Nigeria under the Presidency.

Meet the Champions:

  1. Wisdom Chukwuma – Government College, Ughelli
  2. Otorvo Uyoyou – Alegbo Secondary School, Effurun
  3. Abraham Honour – Okpaka Secondary School, Okpaka
  4. Ekhamateh Splendour – Government Model Secondary School, Asaba
  5. Alika Daniel – Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale

These brilliant students gave it their all. In the first round, they won with a 2–1 score. Then in the final round, they beat their opponents with a 3–0 clean sweep, making a total of 5–1 and becoming overall champions of the world debate contest.

They faced strong competition from teams in Chicago (USA) and Qatar, but their powerful speeches and sharp arguments helped them win the hearts of the judges.

Before they traveled to Qatar, the team visited the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, at Government House in Asaba. The Governor encouraged them, gave them his blessings, and told them he believed in their ability to make Nigeria proud — and they did just that!

Since their victory, people all across Nigeria have been celebrating. In Delta State especially, the excitement is huge. Many believe this shows how investing in education and supporting young people can lead to great success.

Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, which focuses on improving education, is being praised for helping to make achievements like this possible.

Education leaders and the general public have said the students’ performance proves that Nigerian youths have what it takes to succeed anywhere in the world — as long as they are given the right support and opportunities.

This win is more than just a trophy. It shows the world that Nigerian students are smart, confident, and ready to take on global challenges. It also encourages other students to believe in themselves, work hard, and aim high.

With this victory, Delta State is now seen as a center for academic excellence, and the entire country is cheering for these champions who spoke boldly, thought critically, and made history.
