Delta Begins Industrial Push to End Persistent Power Crisis

Asaba, Nigeria — The Delta State Government has launched a major electricity reform programme tagged “Light Up To Industrialise Delta Initiative” aimed at addressing the persistent power supply challenges in the state.

The initiative is designed to position Delta as a leading hub for industrial growth by ensuring stable and reliable electricity for businesses and residents.

Speaking at a press briefing in Asaba on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Economic Planning, Sunny Ekedayen, said the project is part of a broader strategy by the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to transform the state’s economic landscape.

He explained that the initiative is being implemented in collaboration with Power Acumen Consulting Ltd, Detail Solicitors, and Nigeria Infrastructure Bank.

According to Ekedayen, the goal is to build a strong electricity framework capable of supporting industrial expansion and attracting investment.

The commissioner disclosed that the state government has already engaged Power Acumen Consulting Ltd. to carry out a comprehensive assessment of Delta’s electricity sector.

He noted that since late 2025, the consulting firm has conducted extensive fieldwork, engaging stakeholders and examining gaps in infrastructure and institutional structures across the power value chain.

An interim report submitted by the consultants revealed significant weaknesses in the state’s electricity system, recommending a broad overhaul of existing laws and policies.

“The findings point to deep-rooted structural deficiencies, which the government is now ready to address decisively,” Ekedayen said.

While acknowledging the high cost of electricity generation and distribution, Ekedayen assured residents that the government is working to keep tariffs competitive.

He explained that the state plans to leverage existing energy resources to reduce costs while improving supply.

“In the not-too-distant future, Deltans will begin to experience measurable improvements in electricity supply,” he said, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to sustainable solutions.

Also speaking at the briefing, the Commissioner for Finance, Fidelis Tilije, expressed confidence in the success of the initiative.

He stated that the government is fully prepared to finance all stages of the project.

“The state government is ready to support every phase of this initiative. Funding will not be a problem,” Tilije said.

The Light Up To Industrialise Delta Initiative is expected to play a critical role in boosting manufacturing, attracting investors, and creating jobs by solving one of the state’s biggest development challenges—unreliable electricity.

With the planned reforms and partnerships, the Delta State Government says it is taking a decisive step toward building a more resilient and industrialised economy powered by stable energy.
