Asaba, April 8, 2025 — The Delta State House of Assembly is working hard to make the state safer, and on Tuesday, a very important bill called the State Community Security Corps Agency (Amendment) Bill passed its second reading. This means the lawmakers are one step closer to giving more power and support to local security teams called vigilantes.
What is this bill about? This bill wants to improve how local security groups (vigilantes) work in communities. It was introduced by Hon. Dr. Isaac Anwuzia, the lawmaker representing Aniocha South Constituency. He is also the Chairman of the Assembly’s Committee on Peace and Security. He said the bill will help make Delta State safer by giving the local security teams the tools, training, and salaries they need to do their jobs well.
Why is this bill important?
Hon. Anwuzia said that with so many problems like kidnapping, armed robbery, and attacks by herders, the state must act fast. The new law will help local communities work better with security officers to fight crime and keep everyone safe.
He also said that if this law is passed:
- Every security corps member will be paid fairly.
- The lowest salary will be equal to Grade Level 5 in the State Civil Service.
- All 25 Local Government Area Chairmen in Delta State will become members of the Security Corps to help lead and guide the team.
Who else supports the bill?
A total of 27 other lawmakers joined Hon. Anwuzia in sponsoring this bill. During the debate, many lawmakers stood up to support it. They included:
- Rt. Hon. Emeka Nwaobi (Majority Leader)
- Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowowo (Deputy Speaker)
- Hon. Festus Okoh (Deputy Majority Leader)
- Hon. Marilyn Okowa-Daramola (Ika North-East)
- Hon. Oboro Preyor (Bomadi)
- Hon. Charles Emetulu (Ndokwa West)
- Hon. Pereotu Oloye (Burutu 2)
- Hon. Bridget Anyafulu (Oshimili South)
- Hon. Spenser Ahwofa (Ughelli North 2)
- Hon. Perkins Umukoro (Sapele)
- Hon. Mathew Omonade (Ughelli North 1)
They all agreed that better community policing would help protect lives and property and bring peace to Delta State.
What happens next?
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor sent the bill to a Joint House Committee on Special Bills and Peace and Security. This group will study the bill more closely and give a full report by May 20, 2025.
Other news from the House Before the debate, the House also confirmed the appointment of Mr. Boubai Enai as the new Secretary of Bomadi Local Government Council.
This bill shows that Delta lawmakers are taking strong steps to protect their people and communities. If passed into law, it could mean a safer Delta for everyone—kids, parents, and elders alike.
