The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in the House of Representatives have argued in favour of President Muhammadu Buhari’s immediate impeachment over the insecurity in the country.
It was reported that Kingsley Chinda, the leader of the PDP caucus in the House has given three reasons why an impeachment proceeding should be commenced against the president.
Chinda in a statement pointed out that Buhari should be impeached over 1. For alleged incompetence. 2. For alleged persistent and continuous breach of Section 14 (2) (b) of the 1999 constitution (the section stated that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government).
- For alleged incapacity to discharge the functions of the office of president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The statement by the caucus read in part: “The PDP caucus also wants members of the Federal Executive Council to invoke the provisions of Section 144 (1) of the Constitution by declaring that the President is incapable of discharging the functions of the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
It was also gathered that the PDP lawmakers asked Nigerians to compel their representatives in the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against the president over the insecurity in the country.
They accused the president of failing to lead and protect Nigerians from the terrorists and bandits, while the economy is crumbling.
Meanwhile, it was reported that the festering insecurity across the 19 northern states in Nigeria has turned the northern establishment against President Buhari.
According to the report, the regional leaders, who hitherto were supporters of the president, are now of the view that Buhari had woefully failed in meeting the yearnings and aspirations of the region, especially regarding the security of lives and properties.
