The Christian Association of Nigeria has called for unity among Christian leaders, as it honoured Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori with its Christian Icon Award.
The award was presented by CAN President, Most Rev. Daniel Okoh, during the association’s 50th anniversary celebration at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, on Saturday. Okoh said the honour recognised Oborevwori’s contributions to public service, ethical leadership and nation-building.
He said the governor’s commitment to integrity, compassion and Christian values in governance had made him worthy of the recognition. The award also acknowledged his contributions to the Christian community and the country’s development.
Speaking after receiving the award, Oborevwori described the honour as a call to greater service to God and humanity. He said, “When an organisation such as CAN gives you an award, it means a lot because the recognition is based not merely on public service but also on integrity, character and the impact you have made.”
The governor urged public office holders to separate their political responsibilities from their service to God, saying politics should not weaken their faith. “We may be involved in politics, but we must be able to distinguish between serving God and playing politics. These are two different responsibilities, and we must never allow politics to undermine our commitment to God,” he said.
Oborevwori also commended efforts to unite the five blocs within CAN, saying their cooperation could strengthen the Christian community and contribute to national unity. He added that service to God should be driven by sincerity and responsibility, rather than personal gain or public recognition.
Those who accompanied the governor to the ceremony included his predecessor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa; Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor; members of the National Assembly, Victor Nwokolo, Nicholas Mutu and Jonathan Ukodhiko; the Chief of Staff, Government House, Johnson Erijo; and the Senior Political Adviser to the Governor, Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo.
