The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, has urged re-elected chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Delta State Council, Churchill Oyowe, to strengthen ethical journalism and protect journalists’ welfare ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Guwor said Oyowe’s second term offered an opportunity to strengthen the union, improve members’ welfare and uphold professional standards amid concerns over fake news and the challenges posed by new media.
The Speaker, who is also Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, made the call in a congratulatory message issued in Asaba by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke.
He described Oyowe’s re-election as well-deserved, saying it reflected the confidence members had in his leadership.
Guwor urged the new executive to work together and put the interests of the union above personal considerations.
“I urge the new executive members to put the overall interest of the Union above personal considerations, work harmoniously and promote the welfare of members. Unity, cooperation and a shared sense of responsibility will be critical to building a stronger and more vibrant NUJ in Delta State,” he said.
He also appealed to candidates who lost the election and other stakeholders to support the new leadership, stressing that unity was necessary for the union’s progress.
“The strength of the NUJ lies in its oneness. I appeal to all contestants and stakeholders to close ranks and rally around the new leadership in the interest of the Union,” he added.
The Speaker said journalists had an important role to play as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gathered momentum. He urged them to remain objective, fair and balanced while holding public officials accountable.
Guwor assured the union that the Delta State House of Assembly would continue to work with the NUJ, adding that the legislature remained committed to press freedom and the safety of journalists.
He congratulated other elected members of the State Executive Council, including Patrick Ochei, vice-chairman; Felix Ekwu, secretary; Josephine Omodior, assistant secretary; Caroline Ubini, treasurer; Toju Oteri, financial secretary; and Michael Ilaya, auditor.
He commended NUJ members for the conduct of the election and wished Oyowe and his team a peaceful and productive second term.
