The Delta State Police Command has arrested one person in connection with the death of a Deputy Director in the state Ministry of Secondary Education, Mr Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda.
Adeda died following an incident at the office of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu, in Asaba.
The command said a complaint received by the police alleged that Adeda was beaten by three aides to the commissioner during the incident.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Bright Edafe, identified the alleged suspects as Enos Attah, Oputa Okestine and Lucky Adoh.
Edafe said Adoh had been arrested, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend the other two suspects.
He said the Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel E. Erale, had directed the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and Adeda’s death.
According to him, investigators would examine available evidence, including video footage, eyewitness accounts and medical records, to establish what happened.
The police spokesman said the investigation would cover the actions of everyone connected with the incident and determine whether anyone was culpable.
Eralé assured Adeda’s family and members of the public that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law, irrespective of their status or position.
He also urged the public to remain calm and avoid concluding before the investigation is completed.
The police commissioner condoled with Adeda’s family and pledged that the investigation would be conducted professionally and without interference.
