Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested 81 suspected criminals during a coordinated raid on identified crime hotspots across the Asaba metropolis.
The operation, carried out on July 24, was based on intelligence gathered by the police as part of efforts to tackle criminal activities and dismantle suspected criminal networks in the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, saying the raid was led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, alongside tactical teams.
According to him, the operation led to the arrest of 50 men and 31 women suspected of involvement in various criminal activities.
Edafe said some of the suspects were arrested for allegedly selling and possessing suspected illicit drugs, while others were accused of setting up an illegal checkpoint at the Asaba-Onitsha Head Bridge.
He added that officers recovered large quantities of Tramadol and substances suspected to be Indian hemp during the raid.
The police also impounded five vehicles for different offences, including operating an illegal taxi park at Pinnacle Junction along Okpanam Road and allegedly aiding the sale and distribution of suspected illicit drugs.
According to the police, all the suspects and recovered exhibits are in custody, while investigations are ongoing.
Reacting to the operation, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, said the command would continue to rely on intelligence-driven policing to combat crime and improve public safety.
He warned those involved in criminal activities to abandon such acts or face prosecution.
