Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed sadness over the train accident that occurred in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, resulting in the death of four people and injuries to several others.
The governor described the incident as tragic and heartbreaking, extending his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives while wishing the injured a quick recovery.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, Oborevwori said the loss of lives was a painful tragedy not only for the affected families but also for Delta State as a whole.
Following the accident, the governor directed relevant government officials to immediately visit the scene and coordinate rescue operations.
The Commissioner for Special Duties, along with the chairmen of Ika South and Ika North-East local government councils, were deployed to oversee emergency response efforts and provide support to victims.
Oborevwori also commended security agencies for their swift intervention. He noted that the Commissioner of Police visited the scene and deployed security personnel to protect passengers’ belongings and maintain order.
According to the statement, injured passengers were quickly evacuated to nearby hospitals for treatment, while survivors who did not sustain injuries were transported to safety. The bodies of the deceased were moved to a mortuary.
To assist those affected, buses were provided to evacuate passengers and transport injured victims from the accident scene.
Providing an update, Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Council, Hon. Monday Odigwe, said 35 injured passengers were receiving medical care in three hospitals.
He disclosed that 13 victims were being treated at Central Hospital, Agbor, while 12 were receiving treatment at General Hospital, Owa-Oyibu, and 10 others at General Hospital, Owa-Alero.
Odigwe also revealed that arrangements were being made to lift the train from the accident site.
Governor Oborevwori prayed for the peaceful repose of the victims and asked God to grant their families the strength to cope with the loss.
He assured residents that the state government would continue to monitor the situation closely and provide the necessary support to injured passengers and their families.
