ICPC Faces Legal Threat as Aichatou El-Rufai Seeks N2bn Damages

A legal confrontation is brewing between Aichatou El-Rufai and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), following allegations that the anti-graft agency made defamatory statements against her in a recent public release.

Mrs El-Rufai, wife of detained former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has threatened to sue the commission and is demanding N2 billion as compensation for alleged reputational damage.

The dispute arose after the ICPC issued a statement on May 18, 2026, titled “Clarification on the Access Control Protocol at ICPC Headquarters, Abuja.”

The statement, signed by the commission’s spokesperson, Okor Odey, was released amid public discussions surrounding visitation procedures involving the former governor during his detention.

In a pre-action notice filed by her lawyers, Mrs El-Rufai accused the commission of publishing misleading and damaging remarks capable of tarnishing her public image and exposing her to ridicule.

Her legal team argued that some sections of the ICPC statement falsely portrayed her as dishonest and attempted to undermine her credibility before members of the public.

One of the key issues raised by Mrs El-Rufai was the commission’s reference to her as “a woman who identified herself as the wife of a defendant.”

According to her lawyers, the wording appeared deliberately designed to question her identity and status as the lawful wife of the former governor.

She also objected to the commission’s claim that her previous statements were “false and misleading,” insisting that the description painted her as deceitful and unreliable.

The legal notice further challenged allegations that she failed to comply with access and visitation procedures at the ICPC headquarters in Abuja.

Mrs El-Rufai maintained that the claims wrongly portrayed her as someone unwilling to obey official regulations and protocols.

She additionally accused the anti-corruption agency of attempting to discredit her over comments she made concerning the welfare of her husband while in custody, particularly allegations that he was denied food.

According to the notice, the commission’s statements were intended to weaken public confidence in her integrity and damage her reputation.

As part of her demands, Mrs El-Rufai is seeking a public apology and retraction from the ICPC over the statements published against her.

She is also demanding N2 billion in damages for the alleged injury caused to her reputation and public standing.

The notice warned that failure by the ICPC to meet the demands could result in legal action being filed against the commission in court.

As of the time of filing this report, the ICPC had not officially responded to the legal threat.
