Tragedy in Ogwashi-Uku: Vigilante Officer and Suspect Die in Water-Filled Reservoir During Chase

Residents of Ogwashi-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State were thrown into mourning on Thursday morning after a young man and a local vigilante officer reportedly lost their lives during a pursuit operation in the Mega Chi area along Ogbe-Ofu Road.

According to eyewitness accounts and information gathered from a video circulating online, the incident occurred when members of a local vigilante group allegedly chased a young man identified simply as Austin over claims that he was carrying substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

Sources within the community said Austin, in an attempt to escape arrest, reportedly ran into a nearby bush path not knowing there was an uncovered water reservoir hidden within the area. He allegedly fell into the deep water-filled pit during the chase.

In the confusion that followed, one of the vigilante operatives pursuing him also reportedly fell into the same reservoir. Despite efforts by residents and passersby to rescue them, both victims were later confirmed dead at the scene.

The shocking development has sparked widespread reactions among residents of the community, with many expressing concern over the manner in which some local security operatives carry out their duties.

Several community members blamed the tragedy on poor training, lack of proper operational ethics, and unsafe pursuit methods often adopted by some vigilante groups. Others also questioned why the water reservoir was left uncovered in a residential area, describing it as a major hazard to public safety.

“This is a painful and avoidable tragedy,” a resident said. “Both lives could have been saved if there was better training and proper safety measures in place.”

The identities of the deceased vigilante officer had not been officially released as of the time of filing this report.

Authorities in Delta State are yet to issue an official statement concerning the incident, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths are expected to commence.
