Army Tells Court of Alleged Coup Plot Against Tinubu

The Nigerian Army has told a Federal High Court in Abuja that it uncovered what it described as a serious and well-planned attempt to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu.

A military witness, whose identity was concealed for security reasons, said the plot involved both security personnel and civilians. He explained that the investigation began after intelligence reports suggested that a group was secretly planning to remove the government through illegal means.

The witness, identified only as “AAA,” spoke as the fourth prosecution witness in a case involving six defendants. The suspects are facing multiple charges, including treason, terrorism, and money laundering in a suit before the court.

Those on trial include retired and serving security officers as well as civilians, while former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva, was also mentioned in the case and is said to be currently outside the country.

During his testimony, the witness said one of the key suspects was arrested and items recovered from him, including a mobile phone and a notebook, contained important information about the alleged plot. He told the court that the materials included names of individuals and plans that suggested a coordinated effort.

He further explained that investigations revealed communication among the suspects and financial transactions believed to be connected to the alleged plan. According to him, large sums of money were moved through different channels under the guise of legitimate business activities.

The court also heard that meetings were allegedly held at different locations in Abuja, where the suspects discussed plans and possible actions. The witness claimed that some of the discussions involved targeting key locations and individuals.

The presiding judge, Joyce Abdulmalik, admitted several documents presented by the prosecution as evidence, despite objections from defence lawyers. She, however, said arguments about their validity would be addressed later in the trial.

The court also allowed the identities of some military witnesses to remain hidden due to the sensitive nature of the case, while directing that all evidence be properly shared with the defence team.

All the defendants have denied the charges against them and are currently in custody of the Department of State Services. The case has been adjourned for further hearing as the trial continues.
