ASABA, DELTA STATE — The Delta State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists has marked the 2026 International Women’s Day with a well-attended event in Asaba, calling for greater investment in women as a pathway to national development.
The event, themed “Give to Gain… Empower Her Today, Prosper Tomorrow,” attracted participants from various sectors, including journalists, entrepreneurs, students, civil society organisations, and government officials.
Delivering her keynote address, the State Chairperson of NAWOJ, Sonia Unobunjo, stressed that empowering women through education, economic opportunities, and leadership inclusion remains critical to societal growth.
She noted that when women are supported, the benefits extend beyond individuals to families, communities, and the nation.
According to her, the theme of the event reflects the idea that deliberate support for women leads to long-term gains such as economic stability, improved wellbeing, and stronger institutions.
Unobunjo also urged women to support one another through mentorship and collaboration, adding that progress can only be achieved when opportunities are shared.
She further condemned all forms of violence and abuse against women, stressing that no circumstance justifies harassment or mistreatment.
“It is not an excuse to embarrass, rough-handle or rape a woman,” she said, calling for respect and protection of women’s rights.
In her remarks, the guest speaker, Adebowale Tinuade Okonji-Umuokoro, Chief Executive Officer of Graceville Group of Schools, congratulated women on the occasion, noting that International Women’s Day is a global recognition of women’s contributions over more than a century.
She emphasised the importance of mutual support among women, explaining that both giving and receiving are essential for growth and empowerment.
As part of the activities, NAWOJ provided financial support to physically challenged women to assist their businesses and crafts.
Beneficiaries described the gesture as timely and impactful, saying it would help improve their financial independence.
Participants at the event called for stronger policies and collective action to address challenges facing women, urging stakeholders to create more opportunities for women to thrive.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to promoting women’s development, stressing that sustainable progress depends on inclusive participation.
Also present at the event was the Vice Chairman of the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF), Chukwudi Abiandu, who represented the organisation.
The event ended with a shared message that empowering women today is essential to building a more prosperous future for society.
