Iran Calls UN Resolution on Gulf Strikes ‘One-Sided and Politically Motivated’

The government of Iran has criticised a recent resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council condemning its military actions in the Gulf region, describing the decision as unfair and politically driven.

Iran’s reaction followed the adoption of a resolution by the council that denounced alleged missile and drone attacks carried out by Tehran against countries in the Gulf region and Jordan.

The resolution, which was introduced by Bahrain and supported by more than 130 member states of the United Nations, called on Iran to immediately stop all hostile actions in the region.

According to the Security Council, the measure—adopted as Resolution 2817 (2026)—condemned Iran’s alleged missile and drone strikes targeting several Gulf countries.

The resolution was approved with 13 votes in favour, while Russia and China chose to abstain during the vote.

In the document, the council said the attacks had worsened tensions in the Middle East and risked further escalating the ongoing regional crisis.

The council also stated that the strikes violated international law and posed a serious threat to global peace and security.

Members of the Security Council also condemned what they described as attacks on civilian infrastructure.

According to the resolution, facilities such as ports, energy installations, and other public infrastructure were reportedly targeted during the strikes.

The council said these attacks resulted in civilian casualties and caused damage to buildings and other key facilities in the affected countries.

It also reaffirmed its strong support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council as well as Jordan.

Reacting to the development, Gholamreza Raja, Iran’s ambassador to Nigeria, said the resolution failed to present a balanced view of the situation.

Speaking on Monday, the envoy argued that the Security Council ignored what he described as “acts of aggression” against Iran and instead placed blame solely on Tehran.

According to Raja, the resolution did not address the deeper causes of the crisis or the developments that led to the escalation of tensions.

The Iranian diplomat said Tehran considers the resolution one-sided and politically motivated.

He maintained that Iran’s actions were taken in response to threats and developments in the region.

Raja said the measures were carried out under Iran’s right to self-defence, as provided under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which allows countries to defend themselves against attacks.

Despite rejecting the resolution, the Iranian envoy said his country remains committed to international law and peaceful conflict resolution.

He stated that Iran supports dialogue and diplomatic engagement as the best way to address regional disputes.

Raja added that while Iran prefers peaceful solutions, the country will continue to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national security whenever necessary.

The situation has added another layer of tension to the already fragile security environment in the Middle East, where several conflicts and geopolitical rivalries continue to shape regional politics.
