Anioma Nation Marks Second Anniversary of Late Royal Mother, Obi Martha Dunkwu

The Anioma nation on Monday, February 16, 2026, commemorated the second anniversary of the passing of its revered Royal Mother and Omu Anioma, Obi Martha Dunkwu, who died peacefully on February 16, 2024.

In a statement issued to mark the occasion, Major General Raymond Ochei (Rtd), on behalf of himself and his family, paid tribute to the late monarch, describing her as a remarkable matriarch whose leadership and dedication left a lasting impact on Anioma land, Delta State, and Nigeria at large.

Obi Martha Dunkwu served as Omu Anioma — the traditional female monarch and cultural leader of the Anioma people — and was widely respected for her role in promoting peace, unity, and development within the region. During her lifetime, she was known for championing the preservation of Anioma traditions while also encouraging modernisation, education, and youth empowerment.

Major General Ochei noted that the late Royal Mother’s leadership extended beyond cultural duties. He described her as a bridge-builder who fostered harmony among communities and consistently advocated for women’s inclusion in leadership and decision-making processes. Her influence, he said, earned her the revered title of NNEOHA, meaning “Mother to All” or “Mother Without Borders” in Igbo tradition.

According to the tribute, Obi Dunkwu’s tenure was marked by initiatives that strengthened cultural identity, supported social welfare programmes, and promoted educational advancement across Anioma communities. Many families, institutions, and traditional structures, particularly in Delta State, continue to feel the impact of her work.

The statement highlighted her qualities as a custodian of Anioma heritage, a mentor to women and young people, and a moral voice within traditional institutions. She was remembered as a mother figure whose counsel and encouragement provided guidance not only to her immediate community but to leaders and individuals across the region.

Reflecting on her legacy, Major General Ochei described her life as one devoted to service, dignity, and the collective progress of her people. He urged the Anioma community to continue upholding the values she represented, including unity, compassion, and respect for tradition.

As part of the remembrance, prayers were offered for the repose of her soul and for comfort for her family, traditional institutions, and all those who were touched by her leadership.

Obi Martha Dunkwu’s passing in 2024 marked the end of an era for Anioma land, but two years later, tributes suggest that her legacy of cultural preservation and community development remains deeply rooted in the hearts of her people.
