The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has appealed to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to urgently assent to the Delta State Community Security Corps Agency Law, 2025, highlighting its importance in addressing rising security threats across the state.
In a formal letter addressed to the Governor, the forum expressed concern over persistent attacks on farmers by armed herdsmen, kidnapping for ransom, and other violent crimes that are threatening livelihoods, food security, and public confidence in governance.
The law, passed by the Delta State House of Assembly on July 22, 2025, and sponsored by Hon. (Dr.) Isaac Anwuzia, Chairman of the House Committee on Peace and Security, repeals the 2020 version. According to the DOPF, the updated law provides a more robust and structured framework for community-based policing, intelligence gathering, and swift response to local security threats, complementing conventional security agencies.
The forum commended the Governor for assenting to the Delta State Anti-Terrorism and Anti-Cultism (Amendment) Law, 2025, and launching the Delta State Security Trust Fund, but expressed concern that the Community Security Corps Law has remained unsigned several months after passage.
“Laws without enforcement structures become symbolic documents, not instruments of protection,” the letter stated, noting the failure of the Delta State Anti-Open Grazing Law to protect farmers despite its enactment in the previous administration.
The letter also highlighted growing security risks, including the possibility of criminal networks relocating to the Niger Delta following military operations in the North-East, making the implementation of the Community Security Corps Law even more urgent.
The DOPF urged Governor Oborevwori to not only sign the law but also ensure immediate operational structures, including recruitment guidelines, training standards, funding mechanisms, oversight frameworks, and coordination protocols with existing security agencies.
“Assenting to this law and activating its provisions will send a powerful message that your administration is proactive, people-centered, and committed to protecting lives, investments, farmlands, and communities,” the letter concluded.
The appeal was signed by Emmanuel Enebeli, Chairman, and Shedrack Onitsha, Secretary of the Delta Online Publishers Forum.
