Ekpoma, Edo State — The Edo State Police Command has arrested 52 individuals linked to violent acts during a protest in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, while clarifying that no peaceful protesters were detained.
In a statement released by ASP Eno Ikoedem, Police Public Relations Officer, the Command confirmed that Commissioner of Police CP Monday Agbonika, FDC, personally oversaw a heavy security deployment in collaboration with the Nigeria Army, NSCDC, Edo State Security Corps, and Hunters to curb criminality and protect citizens.
The arrested suspects allegedly engaged in vandalism, looting, assault, and rioting, including forcibly entering the palace of the Enogie of Ekpoma, His Royal Highness Anthony Ehizogie Abumere, where they assaulted him and his wife and destroyed property.
The Command emphasized that peaceful protesters were allowed to go home and maintain peace, while the arrested individuals have been arraigned before a competent court.
CP Agbonika reiterated the police commitment to protecting citizens’ rights to lawful protest while maintaining zero tolerance for violence, criminality, and acts that threaten public safety.
The Edo State Police urged residents to disregard social media rumors and rely only on verified information from official sources, assuring the public of its continued resolve to sustain peace and security across the state.
