Senator Natasha Returns to Senate After Six-Month Suspension

ABUJA, Nigeria — Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, returned to the Senate on Tuesday morning, six months after she was suspended by the upper chamber.

The senator arrived at exactly 11:42 a.m., walking into the red chamber with a confident smile before taking her seat. She was seen exchanging pleasantries with a few colleagues as the day’s plenary session continued.

Akpoti-Uduaghan was accompanied by a small group of activists and loyal supporters, including well-known human rights advocate Aisha Yesufu, who was sighted in the visitors’ gallery. Some of the lawmaker’s supporters, however, were reportedly barred from entering the gallery by security officials.

Her return follows a court ruling that described her six-month suspension from the Senate as “excessive,” paving the way for her reinstatement. The Senate had earlier unsealed her office, according to TheCable, signaling compliance with the court’s decision after initially insisting that her suspension remained valid due to ongoing litigation.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s reinstatement also comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding her allegation of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which sparked heated debate earlier in the year.

The senator was suspended on March 6, 2025, after accusing the Senate President of misconduct. During the suspension period, she was denied access to her office, and her security details and allowances were withdrawn, according to reports by TheCable.

While her return marks a major personal and political victory, it also renews focus on the Senate’s internal handling of disciplinary issues and its relationship with the judiciary.

As plenary resumed, Akpoti-Uduaghan appeared composed and engaged, suggesting readiness to continue her legislative duties after months of absence.

Background

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a lawyer and entrepreneur, was elected to represent Kogi Central in 2023 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Known for her activism and outspoken nature, she has been one of the few female lawmakers in the 10th National Assembly and an advocate for women’s rights and transparency in governance.

Her clash with Senate leadership and subsequent suspension had drawn widespread criticism from civil society groups, who viewed the decision as politically motivated and a blow to free speech in the legislature.
