The Anambra State Police Command has reopened investigations into the tragic death of Mr. Okechukwu Akaneme, a respected journalist and former President of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, who died after suffering severe injuries allegedly inflicted by officials of the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA).
What Happened?
According to reports, Mr. Akaneme was assaulted on October 11, 2024, by ASWAMA officials led by a man identified as Joseph Okoye. The attack reportedly happened during an argument over unpaid waste management fees. Witnesses say that the ASWAMA team was accompanied by police officers and tried to arrest Akaneme forcefully when he couldn’t immediately comply.
In the process, his hands were allegedly twisted and locked behind his neck, causing his spinal cord to break. Doctors later confirmed that about 65% of his spinal cord was damaged, leaving him paralyzed and hospitalized for several months.
From Hospital to Death
Following the incident, Akaneme was first taken to Rosary Specialist Hospital in Onitsha. When his condition worsened, he was moved to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, where doctors confirmed the spinal damage was irreversible. He was later transferred to Memfys Neurosurgery Hospital in Enugu, where he sadly passed away on July 10, 2025.
No Arrests Made, Public Outcry Grows
Despite the seriousness of the incident, no arrests were made. The Anambra State Government initially claimed Akaneme was not seriously injured. This sparked public outrage, with many people — including journalists, activists, and members of the public — calling for justice and transparency.
SaharaReporters was among the first to report the attack, and the story gained national attention.
Police Respond and Reopen Case
Following renewed pressure from Akaneme’s family and the public, the Anambra State Police Command issued a statement through its spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirming that a fresh investigation has now been launched.
“With the unfortunate passing of Mr. Akaneme, the Command considers this matter reopened,” SP Ikenga said. “The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, has been directed to immediately review the case file and carry out a full investigation into what happened on October 11, 2024.”
Ikenga acknowledged that earlier internal findings suggested that some individuals involved in the enforcement operation acted outside standard procedures.
He added that the Command has assured Akaneme’s family and the public that no one is above the law and that any officer or agency found guilty will face legal and disciplinary action.
“The Command wishes to reaffirm that no officer of the Nigeria Police Force is above the law,” Ikenga said.
Working With Other Agencies
The police also confirmed they are in contact with relevant state agencies to get their cooperation in uncovering the truth.
Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, said the Command remains fully committed to justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights, adding that no effort will be spared to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Why This Matters
Mr. Akaneme was not just a journalist but also a community leader who had contributed to the social and economic development of Anambra State. His death has raised serious concerns about how some government officials carry out enforcement duties.
For many young people, this case is a painful reminder of the importance of human rights, accountable governance, and the role of citizens in demanding justice.
The police have promised transparency. Now, the public is watching closely to see if justice will truly be served.
