Delta State Gets New Accountant-General, Mr. Vincent Okunbor

As Governor Oborevwori strengthens financial oversight, past allegations spark public interest.

The Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff Oborevwori, has appointed Mr. Vincent Okunbor as the new Accountant-General of the state. This announcement was made official in a letter dated June 5, 2025, signed by the Head of Service, Dr. (Mrs.) Mininimi Oseji.

Mr. Okunbor, who previously worked as Director of Accounts in the Ministry of Finance, is now responsible for managing the state’s money — from income to spending — and ensuring that financial records are handled correctly and transparently. His role is especially important now, as more people are demanding accountability and honesty in how state funds are used.

Full Rank and Benefits

According to the official letter, Mr. Okunbor will receive the full salary and allowances of a Permanent Secretary, based on guidelines from a government circular released in April 2014. The Head of Service stated that the governor expects this promotion to encourage Mr. Okunbor to do his job with “utmost dedication” and follow all financial laws, including the Fiscal Responsibility Law.

Mixed Reactions

The appointment has received mixed reactions. While some people in government and the civil service see it as a reward for Mr. Okunbor’s hard work and experience, others believe the move is part of the governor’s strategy to tighten control over state finances, especially as he enters the second half of his term.

The letter from the Head of Service reads:

“I am pleased to convey the approval of His Excellency, the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff F.O. Oborevwori, for your appointment as Accountant-General of Delta State, with effect from 5th June, 2025… It is expected that this elevation will further motivate you to discharge your responsibilities with utmost dedication, in alignment with the Fiscal Responsibility Law… Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on this well-deserved appointment.”

Background and Controversy

Although Mr. Okunbor has not made any public comments yet, his past has raised some eyebrows. In a previous report by The Story, it was revealed that he and his deputy were allegedly arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Port Harcourt while he was acting Accountant-General. The arrest was connected to an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of N1.3 trillion during the administration of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

This development has led some people to question the decision to give Mr. Okunbor such a sensitive position again. However, no formal charges have been announced publicly, and the matter appears to be under review.

What This Means Going Forward

As the new Accountant-General, Mr. Okunbor will be expected to:

  • Ensure all government money is properly managed and recorded.
  • Help maintain transparency in state spending.
  • Support the state government in meeting its financial goals without waste or fraud.

With Delta State’s finances under growing public attention, many will be watching Mr. Okunbor closely to see how he handles this important responsibility.
