On Thursday, February 20, 2025, President Bola Tinubu shared a story about how he once challenged former military President Ibrahim Babangida. He made these remarks during the launch of Babangida’s autobiography, “A Journey in Service,” held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
In his speech, President Tinubu recalled confronting Babangida after winning a Senate seat in 1992. He questioned why their inauguration was repeatedly postponed, expressing concern that he might face imprisonment for his boldness. Instead, Babangida responded by shaking his hand, a gesture Tinubu remembers fondly.
President Tinubu also praised Babangida for his role in encouraging young, talented individuals to enter politics, acknowledging that without Babangida’s influence, he might not have pursued a political career.
Reflecting on the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election, Babangida stated that his actions were intended to protect Nigeria’s interests.
The event was attended by numerous dignitaries, including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, as well as international figures like former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo.
