Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North in Nigeria’s Senate, has opened up about why he decided to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a letter read during a Senate meeting, Nwoko said he left the PDP because of ongoing problems within the party and because he felt ignored and sidelined by key leaders in Delta State, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.
Nwoko explained that the PDP’s internal conflicts and lack of support from Delta State leaders made it difficult for him to work effectively as a senator. He felt his ideas and efforts to bring development to his region were not being appreciated or supported by the party’s leadership. “I was left with no choice but to move to a party that aligns with my vision for progress and development,” he said.
His decision to join the APC was met with loud cheers from APC senators, who welcomed him warmly during the Senate session. Nwoko’s move is seen as a significant shift in Delta State’s political landscape, where the PDP has traditionally been very strong.
In addition to switching parties, Nwoko called on the Senate to investigate the ongoing crisis within the PDP, warning that a weak opposition party could harm Nigeria’s democracy. He emphasized the need for a stronger and more accountable political system.
Now as a member of the APC, Nwoko has pledged to work closely with the party’s leadership to bring more development projects to Delta North and to continue serving his constituents effectively. His defection could inspire other PDP members to follow suit, potentially reshaping the political dynamics in Delta State and beyond.
