President Donald Trump signed an order to remove the United States from the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council. This council works to protect human rights worldwide.
Cutting Aid to Palestinian Refugees
Trump also decided to stop funding the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which supports Palestinian refugees—people who lost their homes due to conflict. The U.S. used to provide nearly $500 million annually to this agency.
Why Did Trump Make This Decision?
Trump believes the UN is unfair to certain countries, particularly Israel, which often faces criticism from the Human Rights Council. He wants the UN to treat all countries equally.
What About the Palestinians?
Trump suggested that Palestinians should consider relocating to nearby countries like Jordan and Egypt. He also mentioned he doesn’t fully support Israelis living in Gaza but wants to “clean it up and do something with it.”
This Isn’t the First Time
Trump has made similar decisions before. During his first presidency, he also cut funding to UNRWA to push Palestinians to engage in peace talks with Israel.
Other Big Changes
Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump has also:
- Withdrawn the U.S. from the World Health Organization (WHO)
- Pulled out of the Paris Climate Agreement, which aims to combat climate change.
