The Nigerian military has confirmed the emergence of a new terror group known as ‘Lukarawas’ operating in the northwestern states of Sokoto and Kebbi.
This development was disclosed by Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations. The group, reportedly originating from Niger Republic, has expanded its presence following a disruption in military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger due to the recent political unrest in Niger. This has allowed the group to exploit cross-border gaps and difficult terrains to establish itself within the rural areas of Sokoto and Kebbi.
Sokoto’s Deputy Governor Idris Gobir raised concerns about the group’s spread, noting that it is active in several local government areas and is armed with sophisticated weaponry. The state government and federal security agencies are collaborating to counteract the threat, with intelligence, surveillance, and military operations underway to curb the group’s activities. Lukarawas reportedly engages in tactics similar to bandit groups, including attacks on communities and travelers.
