Tensions escalated in Kaduna State during the conduct of local government elections, as reports emerged of youth clashing with authorities over alleged attempts to rig the process in favor of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Witnesses reported heavy gunfire from police officers across various locations, aimed at dispersing angry residents who had taken to the streets in protest.
The unrest followed accusations against the Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission (KADSIECOM) for failing to distribute result sheets, a move that sparked frustration among voters. The situation took a violent turn as clashes broke out between protesters and law enforcement officials, with heavy gunfire reported in several areas.
The turmoil was especially intense in Zaria Local Government Area, where an APC agent was allegedly apprehended with a pre-prepared result sheet, heightening fears of electoral malpractice. Social media users shared their reactions, with some condemning the actions of KADSIECOM and others highlighting the determination of the youth to resist any attempt to undermine the electoral process.
Imran U. Wakili, a witness, shared on social media, “After KADSIECOM refused to distribute the result sheets, an APC agent was caught in Zaria LG with a pre-prepared result sheet. This led to an intense reaction from the frustrated residents.”
Another user, IBRAHEEM, wrote, “Very big shame, they said ‘air daurawa zamuyii,’” reflecting frustration over the alleged malpractice.
Isaac Kundushima added, “Guys ain’t scared of the shooting anymore,” indicating that despite police efforts to disperse the protesters, many remained defiant. Umar Yobe also remarked, “Despite the shootings, they didn’t run. Akwai aiki a 2027,” hinting at anticipated challenges in future elections.
Further underscoring the youth’s resolve, MR DASH wrote, “2027 na do or die wllhi mun parka i ancire mana tsoro,” implying that they would not be intimidated in future political contests.
The Kaduna State local government elections were intended to be a peaceful exercise of democratic rights, but the reported clashes and gunfire suggest deep-seated tensions and distrust in the electoral process. As of now, there has been no official statement from KADSIECOM or the APC regarding the allegations of rigging and the resultant violence. Authorities are urged to address the situation promptly to restore calm and ensure the safety of residents.
