In a tragic turn of events, the Anambra State Government has ordered a full investigation into the alleged murder of Mrs Ogechukwu Okafor, whose death is suspected to be at the hands of her husband, Mr Elijah Emeka Ibeabuchi. The case, which has sent shockwaves through the community, has prompted the state Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare to take immediate action following a formal complaint from the deceased’s family.
The incident reportedly occurred on August 13, 2024, in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area, but was brought to the attention of the authorities after the victim’s family expressed doubts about the circumstances surrounding her death. The family reported the case to the ministry, suspecting foul play after Mr. Elijah, who is said to be a pastor, informed them that his wife had fallen from a four-story building, leading to her death.
In a press statement issued by Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, the media aide to the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare, further details emerged, revealing the family’s suspicions. According to the statement, Mr. Samuel Onuorah, the deceased’s uncle, led the family in lodging the complaint. Onuorah explained that their suspicions arose when they visited the mortuary where Ogechukwu’s body had been deposited and observed clear signs of physical violence, including stab wounds on her neck and chest, contradicting her husband’s claim of a fall.
“The family was devastated to discover that their daughter was not a victim of an accidental fall, but rather, had been brutally murdered,” Onuorah stated.
The commissioner, Ify Obinabo, in her response, has vowed that the state government will pursue justice for the late Ogechukwu. She called on women’s groups, human rights activists, and concerned citizens to join the fight for justice, urging them to raise awareness of the case through social and traditional media.
“This is not just a family matter; this is a societal issue. We will ensure that justice is served for Ogechukwu. The state government will leave no stone unturned in this investigation,” Obinabo declared, assuring that she would escalate the matter to Governor Charles Soludo for immediate intervention.
As the investigation gets underway, the community is left grappling with the loss and the growing concerns over domestic violence and the safety of women. The government’s swift response has brought hope to the grieving family, who continue to demand accountability for the tragic death of their beloved daughter.
