Environmental Taskforce Launches Aggressive Night Campaign Against Illegal Waste Disposal in Delta, Call on Residents to Report Defaulters

In a decisive move to address environmental violations, Comrade Godspower Asiuhwu, Chairman of the Delta State Taskforce on Environment, has urged residents to take an active role in reporting offenders.

Speaking at the 6th edition of the Journalists Hangout, themed “Parley to Party,” organized by the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Asiuhwu called on citizens to assist in combating the growing issue of improper waste disposal.

Asiuhwu specifically pointed out the problem of hotels, businesses, and residential properties discharging untreated waste into public drainages. He noted that the offensive odors affecting many neighborhoods often stem from hotel swimming pools and kitchen wastewater. According to Asiuhwu, some hotels are discharging untreated pool water into drainages under the cover of night, in direct violation of environmental regulations. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report such activities, emphasizing that pool water must be properly treated before being released into the drainage system.

The Taskforce Chairman highlighted Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori’s firm stance on environmental issues, stating that the Governor has zero tolerance for violators. Asiuhwu recounted how the Governor made it clear that even his own property would face closure and fines if found in violation of environmental laws. “The Governor has given us a clear directive to enforce the law without fear or favor,” Asiuhwu declared.

In response to the ongoing issue of illegal waste dumping, Asiuhwu announced the creation of a night task force, which has already resulted in the arrest of over 30 offenders. He also introduced a new initiative to help shop owners clear drainages in front of their businesses, with the task force providing trucks to remove the accumulated waste.

Addressing concerns about Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators responsible for waste collection, Asiuhwu urged residents to report any failures in service. He warned that operators who fail to perform their duties would be brought before mobile courts.

Asiuhwu also discussed the recent relocation of artisans in the state capital territory to Oko Junction, advising developers to use the services of these registered artisans. He warned that non-compliance would have serious consequences, as the government plans to issue an Executive Order requiring developers to hire only registered artisans. “If we find unregistered workers on a construction site, we will assume the developers are bringing criminals into the state and take appropriate action,” Asiuhwu warned.

This proactive strategy by the Delta State Taskforce on Environment marks a significant step in the fight against environmental violations, with residents playing a key role in preserving the state’s environmental integrity.

In response, Comrade Churchill Oyovwe, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists Delta State Council, expressed gratitude to the Taskforce Chairman for accepting the invitation to attend the 6th edition of the Journalists Hangout and for his continued dedication. Oyovwe noted that the presence of the task force chairman reinforces the Union’s responsibility to hold the government accountable.

“We believe that through mutual understanding, we can ensure that Nigerians receive good governance,” Oyovwe stated.

“Our guest is here today to share his journey, the progress made, and the challenges ahead. These are the issues we are here to discuss,” he added.

Comrade Oyovwe emphasized that the platform is not intended for confrontational exchanges, but rather for fostering better communication and understanding between government officials and the media, the fourth estate of the realm.
