Nigerian dancehall and reggae singer, Timaya, has been accused of intellectual property theft by a cultural music group called United Boys Culture.
According to the group, Timaya sampled their song titled ‘Dey Your Dey’ on his latest single of the same title without seeking their consent.
The group’s leader appeared in a video that has been circulating online, appealing to Timaya to stop stealing their intellectual properties. The group also claimed that Timaya had previously sampled another of their songs titled ‘As E Dey Sweet Us, E Dey Pain Dem’ without their permission.
The leader of the group, who is from Etche, Rivers State, called on the popular Nigerian musician to seek their permission if he ever intends to remix their song.
He begged Timaya to leave their songs alone and stop using them without their permission, saying, I want to use this opportunity to call on our brother, Mr. Timaya. I am the leader of United Boys Culture of Etche, Rivers State. We are the original owners of the song, ‘Dey Your Dey.’
“I want to plead with you, you know that the song has been trending since October last year. If you want to remix our song, you are supposed to seek our permission.
But you just went ahead to remake the song. That was how you remake ‘As E Dey Sweet Us, E Dey Pain Dem’ without our permission. Please, leave our songs. I am begging you, Mr. Timaya.”
