The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami has said the 2023 presidential and National Assembly elections attracted 12.99 million cyber-attacks.

He said the attacks were recorded between February 24th, 25th, and 28th, with the presidential election, attracting 6.99 million attacks alone.

The Minister said this in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Uwa Sulaiman on Tuesday while giving a rundown of the activities of the ministry during and after the 2023 presidential election.

He stated that the attacks witnessed during the period include a series of hacking attempts, Distributed Denial of Service, Email and IPS attacks, SSH Login attempts, Brute force injection attempts, Path traversal, Detection evasion, and Forceful browsing.

It was gathered that before the presidential election, Pantami had on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated a committee on an advisory role for the protection of Nigerian Cyberspace and ICT Infrastructure.

The committee was chaired by the Board Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission with the CEOs of NCC, National Information Technology, and Galaxy Backbone as members.

Recall, this is not the first time the Nigerian election will be recording cyberattacks. It was publicized by the Independent National Electoral Commission that its result viewing portal was unsuccessfully attacked after the Ekiti and Osun governorship election in 2022.
