A peaceful fishing village called Akpata, in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State, was turned to ashes on Sunday, May 25, 2025, after a group of suspected Itsekiri youths reportedly attacked and burned the community.
Akpata is an Ijaw village known for fishing. It is also home to a security post managed by Tantita Security Services, a company that helps protect oil facilities, including a nearby one called Akpata Unit Well 10.
Villagers said the attackers came from Omadino community, and they believe the burning was not a mistake. Many think it has something to do with the fight over political boundaries in the Warri Federal Constituency, which is currently causing tension in the area.
When reporters from GbaramatuVoice visited Akpata to see what happened, they found the community completely destroyed. Houses were burned down, fishing nets, boats, and personal belongings were lost in the fire, and families have nowhere to stay.
Men, women, and children are now homeless, sitting in shock as they look at the ashes of what used to be their homes. The smell of smoke still hangs in the air. Some people are crying. Others are trying to find anything left that can still be used.
“This is our home, and now we have nothing,” one local said with tears in his eyes.
Community leaders are calling on the government and security agencies to quickly step in, investigate what happened, and protect the people from more attacks.
Right now, the villagers need food, shelter, clothes, and help to rebuild their lives.
