U.S. Lawmakers in Nigeria for Fact-Finding Mission, Hold Talks with NSA Ribadu

A high-level delegation from the United States Congress has met with Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, in Abuja as part of ongoing efforts to deepen security cooperation between both countries.

The delegation — which included Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart, Rep. Norma Torres, Rep. Scott Franklin, Rep. Juan Ciscomani, Rep. Riley M. Moore, and the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills — arrived in Abuja on Sunday for a fact-finding visit.

According to information gathered from Mr. Ribadu’s update on X, the visit followed earlier engagements in Washington, D.C., where Nigerian and US officials discussed shared security concerns and long-term cooperation.

“This morning, I received a US Congressional delegation on a fact-finding mission to Nigeria, following our earlier engagements in Washington, DC, on shared security priorities,” Ribadu wrote.

He said discussions in Abuja focused on: Counter-terrorism cooperation, Promoting regional stability, Expanding the Nigeria–US strategic security partnership

The NSA expressed confidence that the engagement would strengthen trust between both nations and reinforce their joint commitment to peace and stability.

The meeting occurred shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump redesignated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern over alleged religious freedom violations, a move that came with warnings of possible U.S. military action.

The Nigerian government has consistently rejected the accusations, insisting that insecurity in the country affects citizens of all religious backgrounds.

Despite growing international scrutiny, Nigeria has continued diplomatic outreach to global partners, particularly on security matters.

On November 20, Mr. Ribadu met with U.S. Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon to discuss strategies for tackling Nigeria’s multiple security challenges.

On November 27, President Bola Tinubu approved Nigeria’s membership in the US-Nigeria Joint Working Group, a major step aimed at enhancing bilateral security collaboration.

The formation of the group was one of the outcomes of the previous high-level meetings in Washington, D.C., led by Ribadu.

With this latest visit, both countries appear to be moving toward a more structured and long-term security partnership.
