To improve the criminal justice system and bring up to speed the administration of criminal justice laws in Delta, a stakeholders engagement forum is imminent.
Disclosing this in his Chambers when he played host to the Indigenous Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Delta State Council, the Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Delta State, Isaiah Bozimo, Esq, noted that the stakeholders include the judiciary, NBA, the Nigeria Police Force, and Correctional Services (Prisons).
According to the erudite Number 1 Law Officer in the State, the need for public engagement has become necessary, viewed against the backdrop of the laws that may have needed a rejig.
The Delta Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice also stated that though the administration of Criminal justice laws had excellent intentions upon enactment, there were plausible reasons to check the disconnect between the spirit and letters of what the law stipulates and its application, especially as it dovetails around current realities.
On the Violence Against Person’s Prohibition Act which is still being finetuned at the Delta State House of Assembly, Isaiah Bozimo Esq said the VAP law is very important to his ministry and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.
He assured that his ministry, through the office of the Public Defender (OPD), will not promote any clause that tinkers with strict penalties, “stricto senso”, the deliberate defilement of minors under any guise whatsoever.
Isaiah Bozimo, while responding to a question dovetailing on the Correctional services adulating alleged suspects as was recently viral on the Chidinma Ojukwu queenship title, bemoaned the fact that the bulk of inmates is Awaiting Trial people. He said such a development is problematic, anomalous, lamenting that a facility that ought to deter crime is now an incubator of the same crime.
Earlier, the Chairman of indigenous Correspondents Chapel, Comrade Andy Emephia, sued for the cooperation of the ministry towards simplifying the delivery of the ministry,s message to the grassroots, which is its core mandate.
