Skills, Education, and Welfare: Insights from Hon. Bridget Anyafulu at the Journalists Hangout

At the 16th edition of the Journalists Hangout organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Delta State Council, Hon. Bridget Anyafulu, representing Oshimili South in the Delta State House of Assembly, shared profound insights into her legislative and development efforts. The event featured engaging discussions on pressing issues, with Hon. Anyafulu providing actionable insights into areas ranging from youth empowerment to housing challenges.

Hon. Anyafulu revealed her groundbreaking partnership with artisans in Oshimili South to address youth unemployment and skills development. Under this initiative, children seen loitering after school or during holidays are encouraged to join skills acquisition centers. “If you have a tailor shop or you are doing hairdressing, catch them and put them there. Let them start by fetching water, and one day they will learn to do it themselves,” she explained, emphasizing the need for proactive mentorship.

During her oversight function at Technical Model Colleges, she witnessed exceptional craftsmanship among students. She highlighted their ability to manufacture cars, mold blocks, and produce hospital beds and furniture. “There’s no need to import hospital beds for our primary health centers. These students can produce them locally if provided with materials,” she said, advocating for greater investment in technical education to harness local talent and reduce dependence on imports.

She also called for broader recognition of these schools, stating, “The government is underreported. Let Delta State know the capacity of our technical colleges. They can generate revenue for the state while equipping our youth with practical skills.”

Hon. Anyafulu proudly announced that since the Assembly’s inauguration, over 20 bills have been passed into law, with three receiving assent, alongside numerous motions.

As Chairman of the House Committee on Housing, she addressed the challenges of migration and rising housing demand in Oshimili South. She proposed innovative solutions, including the use of local laterite for building affordable homes. “We must think outside the box. With our resources, we can construct durable homes in suburban areas for those working in Asaba,” she said, adding that collaboration with housing authorities and stakeholders is underway to address the issue.

On the increasing presence of children begging around Asaba, Hon. Anyafulu stressed that most of them are not Deltans. She recounted her efforts in collaboration with the police to rescue children and enforce the state’s child rights laws. “Every child must be in school during school sessions. I arrest those children and ensure they are enrolled in school,” she said, urging families to prioritize child welfare.

She condemned the involvement of children in begging and prostitution, calling on relevant ministries to take decisive action. “Adolescent girls should not be part of this business. If adults choose that path, they should take it elsewhere,” she stated firmly.

In addressing societal challenges, Hon. Anyafulu urged families to play active roles in mentoring children and promoting African values. “Parenting has failed because we have prioritized making money over raising responsible children. Take responsibility for your nieces and nephews; mentorship goes a long way,” she advised.

Comrade Churchill Oyovwe, Chairman of the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, lauded Hon. Anyafulu for her impactful contributions. “You are a critical stakeholder. We value your engagement and believe in your capacity to address these pressing issues,” he said.

Through her initiatives and advocacy, Hon. Bridget Anyafulu continues to make strides in addressing critical issues, including youth empowerment, technical education, housing, and child welfare, setting a standard for proactive and impactful leadership in Delta State.
