Port Harcourt, July 28, 2025 – The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced a new date for the 2025 local government elections. The polls, originally scheduled for August 9, will now hold on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
This change follows the declaration of a state of emergency in the state, which the commission said disrupted earlier election plans.
RSIEC Chairman Michael Odey made the announcement during a stakeholder meeting held on Monday at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.
“The election will now be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025,” Odey said. “It became imperative to adjust the electoral calendar.”
New Timetable for the Elections
With the new date, the commission also released an updated schedule to guide political parties and voters:
- Party Primaries: Between July 31 and August 3, 2025
- Submission of Candidates’ Names: August 3 and 4, 2025
- Campaigns Start: Tuesday, August 12, 2025
- Ad-hoc Staff Recruitment: Saturday, August 16, 2025
- List of Candidates Published: Wednesday, August 20, 2025
RSIEC encouraged all political parties and stakeholders to stick to the new timeline and prepare responsibly for the elections.
