Rivers APC Rejects Impeachment Move Against Governor Fubara

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has strongly rejected the impeachment proceedings initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing the move as unacceptable and capable of destabilising the state.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, January 8, 2026, and signed by the party’s spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the Rivers APC said it was alarmed by the latest developments from the Rivers State House of Assembly.

While acknowledging that the legislature is an independent arm of government with constitutional powers of checks and balances, the party said resorting to impeachment against an APC governor was unjustified and politically dangerous.

“Our position as of today on this matter is that we solemnly reject the resort to an impeachment process against our Governor and his deputy,” the statement read.

The party warned that it would be wrong to allow internal political disputes that originated within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to spill over into the APC and threaten governance in Rivers State.

According to the Rivers APC, the impeachment threats are reportedly linked to disagreements over the state budget, an issue the party said has already been constitutionally addressed.

The party recalled that during the period of emergency rule in Rivers State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu transmitted a budget to the National Assembly in May 2025. The budget, totalling ₦1.485 trillion, was approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025.

The APC explained that the approved budget is meant to run for one year, up to August 2026, and that Governor Fubara is not under any constitutional obligation to present a supplementary budget if he is satisfied with the existing provisions. It also noted that the constitution permits a governor to continue spending for up to six months into a new fiscal year.

Based on this, the party argued that the budget issue does not provide sufficient grounds for impeachment.

The Rivers APC, therefore, called on members of the State House of Assembly, particularly those elected on the platform of the APC, to resist what it described as external pressure aimed at destabilising the government.

“We strongly advise all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, especially APC members, to resist pressures from outside the Assembly chambers to destabilise the Government of Rivers State,” the statement said.

The party further pledged to protect the APC-led government in the state, warning against what it described as “fratricidal disagreements” within the party.

“Let it be known that our party will do everything possible to ensure that the Government of Rivers State, which is an APC government, is not destabilised,” the statement added.

The APC urged lawmakers to immediately discontinue the impeachment process, warning that it could damage the image of the party and hinder development in Rivers State.

The statement concluded with a call for democratic stability, stressing that Rivers State must remain governed by democratic principles and not political vendettas.

“Let our state remain a democracy and not a politicocracy,” the party said.
