Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is set to secure a second term as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) after no other candidates emerged to contest her position. Her current term, which began in March 2021, will end in August 2025.
Okonjo-Iweala, who is the first woman and first African to lead the WTO, enjoys strong support from many member nations.
In July 2024, 58 of the 164 member states voiced their backing for her continued leadership, citing her hard work and reform efforts in revitalizing the organization.
The African Group within the WTO spearheaded efforts to encourage her re-nomination, acknowledging her achievements during her first term.
