Ogwashi-Uku community laments over electricity billing increment, says unacceptable

The people of Ogwashi-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta state have described the recent increment of electricity bill by BEDC from seven thousand five hundred naira to thirty-three thousand four hundred naira as totally unacceptable.

This was disclosed by the leader of the Ogbe-Ofu community, back of African house, Sir Matthias Ashinze in an interaction with newsmen at Ogwashi-uku.

According to the people, the five hundred percent increment was not only unacceptable but unethical and unsustainable, stressing that it amounted to robbery.

They also revealed that the Federal Government had not increased electricity tariff as earlier proposed, wondering why BEDC should rush to effect the increase, adding that it was pure extortion.

The people also noted that BEDC had been gradually increasing its bill since January 2020, saying that the January bill was four thousand two hundred and sixty-seven kobo only to be increased to five thousand sixty-six kobo in February and in March.

They however condemned the BEDC for equally increasing their bill to six thousand two hundred and twelve kobos adding that in may it equally increased to seven thousand three hundred and ninety-six kobo.

Speaking further, people from the community said the recent bill of June 2020 came as a big surprise to them observing that it equally increased from seven thousand three hundred and ninety-six kobo to thirty-three thousand four hundred naira.

They however wondered the reason for the high increment explaining that many of the electric poles, transformers, and wires used for the electrification of the community were purchased by individuals.
